Black Mold Found in home...?

Question: We finally that the leak that was entering our window sill was coming from the sliding door on the upper floor which was not installed properly . The mold on the 2x4 's when the drywall was peeled off looked black, and the wood framing for the window was soft, black, and easily destroyed with a fork. We cracked the window and have a fan running in the room to help dry and push the mold outdoors but what else can be done before the job is completed? A lot of the drywall will be replaced, as well as lots of the wood, but what risk is it for us to be in the house until the job is finished? It should take a few weeks. Can we just close off the room? Thanks so much

Answer: Black mold or any mold for that matter is totally harmless to most of us. That is 99.999999% of the population. It is a rare thing for mold to cause any problems to humans. Sure, there are those of us whom are really made ill by mold, mildew, and dust. That is extremelly rare. Its a scare tactic used to frighten people into spening huge sums of money "demolding" a house. The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta states that mold, even black mold, is totally harmless to us. Those rare few, that it is, mold of any kind, black, green, or red, must be removed and the indivdiuals not exposed to it or severe illness might result. We as humans have lived with mold since Adam and Eve. Where is the news that mold is making people sick and killing them. No such a thing. I think the scare tactic on the Program 60 minutes about 5 years ago really frightened people into beliveing that black mold is very very dangerous. A tactic that CBS used to increase viewers and importance of 60 minutes but totally false for most of us. Go to the CDC site and confirm what I am saying for yourself. Id say by now, you'd know full well if mold makes you sick. If it hasnt. Dont be alarmed one bit.
